Roleplaying Tutorial: Blood Loss
Blood loss in roleplaying is frequently written unrealistically. Here's what you need to know:
Introduction
The amount of blood in a human body makes up approximately 7 percent of body weight. An average adult human with a weight of 150 to 180 pounds will contain approximately 4.7 to 5.5 liters (1.2 to 1.5 gallons) of blood. A person can lose 10%-15% of their blood without experiencing any setbacks.
8% - 9& of a child's body weight is blood.
Animals vary.
Hemorrhage Classification
Class I Hemorrhage | 0% - 15% | Minimal blood loss
Symptoms:
- No change in vitals
- May experience anxiousness
- Blood transfusion is not necessary
Class II Hemorrhage | 15% - 30% | Mild blood loss
Symptoms:
- Rapid heart beat
- Decrease in pulse pressure
- Skin may feel cool and appear pale
- May feel anxious, cranky and confused
- Blood transfusion is not necessary most of the time
Class III Hemorrhage | 30% - 40% | Moderate blood loss
Symptoms:
- Heart rate increases
- Shock
- Mental status worsens
- Blood pressure drops
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Blood transfusion is necessary
Class IV Hemorrhage | 40% - ∞ | Severe blood loss
Symptoms:
- Previous symptoms intensify
- Probably unconscious/coma
- Lethargic
- Cold extremities
- Death almost always occurs
Important Note Regarding Class IV
The probability of surviving after losing that much blood is very unlikely - especially in The Last War where the medical equipment used is not up to modern standards. There are exceptions because of the existence of magic, but please don't make it too convenient because that's boring. :/ If you're an inexperienced roleplayer, it's probably best not to mention how much blood your character lost if you want them to live.
